What are local citations and why do they matter?
A local citation is any online listing of your business's name, address, and phone number (your “NAP”) — on directories like BBB, Yelp, Angi, chambers of commerce, and industry sites. Consistent citations across directories Google trusts are a ranking and trust signal: they corroborate that your business is real, established, and located where you say it is.
Google cross-checks your details against these third-party listings. When your NAP matches everywhere, it raises confidence in your listing; when it conflicts (an old address, a different phone), it erodes it. That's why exact formatting matters — “Ste 200” versus “Suite 200” can register as a mismatch.
Citations also feed AI visibility: assistants like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overview lean on the same web-wide corroboration to decide whether to name you. More trusted mentions, said consistently, make you a safer business to recommend.
AyanaSEO doesn't build citations for you — it finds the gaps (trusted directories your competitors are on and you aren't) so you or your marketer can add them. See the companion guides on finding those gaps and adding a listing correctly.
